Cubs Need Extra Frames to Get Past Knights
|
With catcher Mike Piazza leading the charge, the Chicago Cubs defeated the Charlotte Knights, 7-5, at Comiskey Park. Piazza, who finished 2nd in the FL in RBI with 131 in 1995, was 2 for 5 with 2 home runs and was hit by a pitch, while scoring 3 times and driving in 3. The winner was Chicago reliever Julio Valera, now 1-0. The loser was Tim Burke. Chicago goes to 10-4 with the win.
Chicago used the clutch hitting of Trot Nixon to capture the win. The right fielder drilled a 2-run home run in the top of the 12th inning to put the Cubs ahead, 7-5. It was his only hit in 6 at-bats, but it was a big one.
"I like our moxie," said Cubs manager Anthony Perez.
