Sheffield Slugs Mets to 8-3 Win
The New York Mets beat the Baltimore Orioles, 8-3, at Memorial Stadium. The Mets got a fine performance from shortstop Gary Sheffield, who captured player of the game honors. He was 2 for 3 with 2 home runs and 2 walks, while adding 4 RBI and scoring twice. With the loss, Baltimore falls to 7-6.

Sheffield contributed a big hit, a 2-run home run, for New York in the top of the fifth. With his team trailing 3-2, Sheffield took a fastball from Ben McDonald and stroked the home run to center. His 7th home run of the season allowed the Mets to leap in front, 4-3.

"We did a lot of things right," said Sheffield.
