Yankees Trip Cardinals, 3-2
|
The New York Yankees got a good effort from starter Mark Langston in defeating the St. Louis Cardinals at Yankee Stadium. The final score was 3-2. The winning pitcher was Langston, now 10-9. He tossed 7 innings of 5-hit ball, while walking 2 and fanning 7. With the win, New York goes to 55-76, while the Cardinals fall to 74-58.
With runs few and far between, the Yankees had to seize their opportunities when they came. One of the most important chances for New York came in the bottom of the seventh inning, when second baseman Randy Ready delivered a run-scoring single. The single was hit off Joe Johnson and made the score 3-2, Yankees. Ready was 1-2 with a walk.
"It'd be nice to win by four or five runs," Ready said, "instead of holding our breath the whole game."
