Jack Murphy Stadium was the site of a tense game between the San Diego Padres and Colorado Rockies.

Colorado starter Kelly Downs put a stranglehold on the San Diego offense. The right-hander had complete command of his fastball in leading the Rockies to a 3-1 win. Downs picked up the win for Colorado, going 7 innings. He gave up 1 run on 3 hits. He now sports a record of 14-9.

It could have been a different outcome for Colorado, had it not been for Juan Gonzalez, the top prospect . Gonzalez contributed a 2-run home run in the top of the third inning to put Colorado up, 3-0.

"We faced good pitching and still got it done," said Gonzalez.

The Rockies bumped their record to 68-66 with this latest triumph.
