Red Sox Walk Off with Win
|
Extra innings were needed to determine a winner at Fenway Park.
The Boston Red Sox faced a tough opponent in Cleveland pitcher Sterling Hitchcock, but did just enough to pull out the victory at Fenway Park by a final score of 2-1. Hitchcock went 10 innings and allowed 1 earned run. The winner was Roberto Hernandez in relief. His record improves to 2-10. Sterling Hitchcock took the loss.
The game was at a stalemate until shortstop Scott Fletcher came to bat in the bottom of the 11th. Facing Cleveland pitcher Willie Banks, he hit a 0-2 sinker for a run-scoring double. It was a game-changer, putting Boston on top, 2-1.
Fletcher described the clubhouse as "kind of rowdy" after the game.
Boston is now 53-82, Cleveland 66-69.
