The Reds had to overcome a fine effort from Boston pitcher Shinji Imanaka to grab a narrow 5-4 win at Fenway Park. Imanaka went 8 innings and allowed 5 earned runs. The win was credited to Arthur Rhodes in relief. His record improves to 1-1. Shinji Imanaka took the loss. The Red Sox fall to 5-8 and continue their uninspiring start to the 1997 season.
Fernando Vina, who finished 3rd in the FL in on-base percentage with .384 in 1995, helped out the Cincinnati cause in the top of the seventh inning with a 2-run double. For the game, the second baseman was 2 for 5 with 2 doubles, while adding 3 RBI.
"You get some opportunities, you better take advantage of them," said Boston manager Brett Williams.
