Behind a solid performance from catcher Rick Wilkins, the Kansas City Royals defeated the St. Louis Cardinals, 6-4. Wilkins went 2 for 3 with 2 singles, a walk, and was hit by a pitch, while scoring 2 runs for the Royals. Armando Benitez closed the door for Kansas City, picking up his 1st save of the year. The Royals, now 10-5, have been on a roll in the early going.

Kansas City right fielder Orlando Merced contributed to the cause with a 2-run home run in the top of the fourth. For the game, Merced was 1 for 4 with a home run. He drove in 2 runs and scored once.

"We'll relax tonight and get back after it tomorrow," Wilkins said after the game.
