Tigers Lose Despite McGwire's Valiant Effort
|
The Detroit Tigers got a sterling performance from first baseman Mark McGwire, but the Marlins still prevailed, 5-2. McGwire was named the player of the game in a losing cause. He went 3-3 with 2 home runs and a walk. Pete Schourek got the win, improving to 2-0. He pitched 5.1 innings, giving up 5 hits and 1 run, while striking out 4 and walking 3. The Tigers fall to 6-7 and continue their uneasy start to the 1994 season.
Having an impact for Florida was Ellis Burks. In the top of the fourth inning, the two-time All-Star had a run-scoring double to make the score 1-0, Marlins.
Burks said his wife shared good advice with him before the game. "She said, 'Don't allow this game to make you mad.' When I thought about it, I realized this is just a game. I was able to relax at the plate."
