Senators Sneak Past Expos, 4-3
|
The Washington Senators did just enough to secure a 4-3 victory over the Montreal Expos at Olympic Stadium. Nobody did more than pitcher Erik Hanson, who captured player of the game honors. The win was credited to Todd Jones in relief. His record improves to 1-1. Dave Leiper took the loss. The loss drops Montreal to 9-5.
The Expos had been locked in a 3-3 tie with the Senators going into the top of the 14th inning. That changed quickly when the 31-year old first baseman Fred McGriff came to the plate. McGriff hit a run-scoring double on a first pitch fastball from Montreal hurler Bobby Munoz. It was McGriff's 4th double of the year.
"You get some opportunities, you better take advantage of them," said Montreal manager David Polakoff.
