Padres Beat Visiting Athletics, 3-1
|
The Padres had to overcome a fine effort from Oakland pitcher Todd Stottlemyre to grab a narrow 3-1 win at Jack Murphy Stadium. Stottlemyre went 8 innings and allowed 3 earned runs. The save went to Gregg Olson, his 1st this season. The loss drops Oakland to 1-1.
San Diego first baseman Troy Neel gave his club a productive at-bat in the bottom of the seventh inning. With the bases empty and the Padres leading 2-1, Neel hit a solo home run.
"I tell our guys all the time, 'Every pitch is the right pitch if you put it in the right place, you believe in it and have conviction,'" San Diego manager said.
