Borders Goes Off, But Whalers Win
The inspired effort of Toledo catcher Pat Borders was not enough to prevent a 7-4 loss to the Hartford Whalers. Borders went 2-3 with 2 home runs and 2 walks, while adding 3 RBI and scoring twice. Hartford starter Bryan Rekar was credited with the win after throwing 106 pitches over 6.2 innings. His record now stands at 2-1. Brad Cornett was credited with the save for Hartford, his 1st of the season.

Early in the game, third baseman John Wehner had a 2-run single for Hartford. It was his 26th hit of the season and put the Whalers on top, 3-1.

In postgame comments to the Hartford Today, Wehner said, "If the effort is there, the wins will come."

Every game is important, even these early ones, if the Whalers hope to make a postseason run.
