The Creams grabbed a win, 5-3, at Busch Stadium, overcoming a fine effort from St. Louis pitcher Chris Hammond. Hammond went 6 innings and allowed 1 earned run. The Cardinals fall to 7-8 and continue their wobbly start to the 1997 season.

Rey Sanchez's at-bat in the top of the seventh inning was a big one for Milwaukee. Coming to bat with two out, runners on 1st and 2nd and Milwaukee trailing 3-2, the shortstop hit a run-scoring single.

"We'll enjoy this win," said Sanchez. "But there's more we hope to accomplish."
