Thompson Delivers Clutch At-Bat for Savannah in Walk-Off Win
|
Jacksonville got a terrific performance from pitcher Jon Lieber, but it wasn't enough to beat the Savannah Swamp Foxes. Savannah won the Paradise Grounds contest, 4-3. Lieber was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He threw 8 innings allowing 3 runs. The Swamp Foxes bumped their record to 16-15 with this latest triumph.
The game was at a stalemate until center fielder Ryan Thompson came to bat in the bottom of the 13th. Facing Jacksonville pitcher Jose J. Bautista, he hit a full count fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Savannah on top, 4-3.
Thompson said his wife shared good advice with him before the game. "She said, 'Don't allow this game to make you mad.' When I thought about it, I realized this is just a game. I was able to relax at the plate."
