The Asheville Moonshiners managed to get by the Hartford Whalers, 5-4, at Wolves Ballpark. Asheville first baseman Randall Simon took player of the game honors. Orel Hershiser was the winner. Over 6 innings, he allowed 2 runs on 6 hits, with 3 walks and 2 strikeouts. Mike Draper finished the game for Asheville and earned his 9th save.

Helping the Asheville cause was Deivi Cruz. In the top of the fifth, the 24-year old shortstop had a solo home run to make the score 2-1, Moonshiners.

Simon said his wife shared good advice with him before the game. "She said, 'Don't allow this game to make you mad.' When I thought about it, I realized this is just a game. I was able to relax at the plate."

The win puts the Moonshiners at 21-16, while the Whalers drop to 25-12.
