Devarez Excels, But Whalers Win
|
Ocean City catcher Cesar Devarez had a terrific game, but it still wasn't enough to get his team a win. Devarez went 3 for 4 with 2 home runs and a double, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 3, even as Hartford beat the Blue Crabs, 9-8. Devarez was named the player of the game despite the loss. Bryan Rekar was the winning pitcher. Over 5 innings, he allowed 6 runs on 11 hits, with no walks and 6 strikeouts. The save went to Billy Wagner, his 9th this season.
John Wehner had a nice at-bat for the Whalers with one out in the top of the sixth. With the bases loaded, the third baseman hit a 2-run double, which would prove important in the Hartford win.
"I believe in our guys," said Hartford skipper . "I like the energy they're playing with."
The second-place Whalers now have a 7-game winning streak.
