Blue Jays Double Up Detroit, 6-3
|
The Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Detroit Tigers, 6-3, at SkyDome today. Leading the charge for Toronto was designated hitter Mark McGwire. He hit 2 home runs, while adding 3 RBI and scoring twice. Hipolito Pichardo was the winning pitcher. Over 7.1 innings, he allowed 2 runs on 5 hits, with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts. Detroit, at 4-11, is off to a poor start in 1997.
With runs few and far between, the Blue Jays had to seize their opportunities when they came. One of the most important chances for Toronto came in the bottom of the fourth inning, when second baseman Derek Jeter delivered a run-scoring single. The single was hit off Tim Belcher and made the score 3-1, Blue Jays. Jeter went 1 for 4.
"We put it together today and came out with the win," McGwire said in postgame remarks. "That's the main thing."
