Behind a solid performance from catcher Matt Nokes, the Baltimore Orioles defeated the San Diego Padres, 13-4. Nokes was 3-4 with 2 home runs and a walk, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 2 for the Orioles. The Padres fall to 8-8 and continue their uneasy start to the 1997 season.

In the top of the eighth, with Baltimore leading 8-1, Matt Franco hit a fastball from Calvin Schiraldi for a bases-clearing double, giving the Orioles the lead, 11-1.

"It's always a heck of a lot easier to get to sleep after a win," Franco told the Baltimore Chronicle. "I know I'll rest easy tonight."
