The Bluff City Beasties got a good effort from starter Steve W Sparks in defeating the Columbus Clippers at Ravens Ballpark. The final score was 3-2. The winning pitcher was Sparks, now 8-7. He tossed 7 innings of 3-hit ball, while walking 2 and fanning 7. Pat Combs picked up the save, his 1st.

In the bottom of the fifth, with Bluff City leading 2-1, designated hitter Jeff Treadway hit a solo home run. The hit came off Glendon Rusch and put the Beasties ahead, 3-1.

"We made a couple of mistakes," said Columbus skipper , "and it cost us."

Bluff City now sits in 5th place in the Atlantic Southeast at 39-38.
