Mitchell Leads Spiders to Win
|
The Cleveland Spiders defeated the St. Louis Cardinals, 6-4, in Federal League action at Busch Stadium. Kevin Mitchell received player of the game honors. The 14-year veteran went 2-3 with a home run, a double, and a walk. He scored 2 runs and drove in 4. The winner was Cleveland reliever Willie Banks, now 3-0. The loser was Scott Erickson. Steve Karsay sewed up the save, his 4th.
Mitchell had a game-changing home run in the top of the eighth. On a 2-1 fastball from Terry Mathews, he banged a grand slam home run to left, giving the Spiders a 6-3 lead. It was the 8th home run of the year for Mitchell.
"I was able to barrel up some pitches," said Mitchell.
The Cardinals fall to 9-10 and continue their uneasy start to the 1997 season.
