Victory Over Dodgers Takes Washington to 11-7
|
The Los Angeles Dodgers got a superb performance from first baseman Shawn Green, but the Washington Senators still won the game, 7-5. Green was named the player of the game despite the loss. He was 3-5 with a home run and 2 singles. He drove in 5 runs and scored once. Erik Hanson was the winning pitcher. Over 7.1 innings, he allowed 5 runs on 9 hits, with 3 walks and 10 strikeouts. Milt Hill picked up the save, his 2nd.
A crucial at-bat came with runners on 1st and 2nd and no one out in the bottom of the third inning. That's when shortstop Alex Rodriguez, who finished 5th in the UL in wins above replacement with 6.1 last year, reached on an error by the 3B. The Senators went on to win.
Rodriguez said his wife shared good advice with him before the game. "She said, 'Don't allow this game to make you mad.' When I thought about it, I realized this is just a game. I was able to relax at the plate."
The Dodgers, now 7-12, continue their slow start.
