Arizona pitcher Scott Karl gave the Mets all they could handle, but in the end, New York left Bank One Ballpark with a 5-3 win. Karl allowed 4 earned runs on 3 hits over 7 innings. Takehiro Ishii was credited with the save for New York, his 2nd of the season. The Diamondbacks drop to 9-11 and continue their inconsistent start to the 1997 season.
New York used the timely hitting of Magglio Ordonez to capture the win. The right fielder socked a run-scoring double in the top of the eighth inning to put the Mets ahead, 4-3. It was his only hit in 3 at-bats, but it was an important one.
"I like our moxie," said Mets manager Michael Kritikos.
