The Kansas City Royals defeated the Boston Red Sox, 16-1, in Federal League action at Fenway Park, with Kansas City shortstop Barry Larkin named player of the game. Rheal Cormier, the winner, improved to 2-1. He held Boston to 1 earned run on 5 hits over 9 innings, while racking up 7 strikeouts. The Red Sox fall to 7-12 and continue their lackluster start in 1997.

The result might have been different for Kansas City, had it not been for Jeromy Burnitz. The designated hitter produced a bases-clearing double in the top of the seventh inning to put the Royals ahead, 12-0. For the game, Burnitz had 1 double and 1 single in 6 at-bats.

"We swung the bats good throughout the lineup," said Kansas City skipper Daniel Drucker.
