Red Sox Continue Hot Streak with Extra-Inning Win
|
Boston beat Chicago at Fenway Park, escaping with a 6-5 win. The win in large part was due to left fielder Barry Bonds, who earned player of the game honors. He went 3 for 4 with a double, 2 singles, and a walk. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. With the win, Boston elevates its record to 10-10.
The game was at a stalemate until right fielder Tony Gwynn came to bat in the bottom of the 11th. Facing Chicago pitcher Doug Jones, he hit a 1-2 changeup for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Boston on top, 6-5.
"This game tested our mettle," said Gwynn.
