Mets Prevail, 5-3, Over Washington
|
The New York Mets bested the Washington Senators, 5-3, at RFK Stadium. Gary Sheffield was named player of the game. He was 4-5 with 2 triples and 2 doubles. He scored 2 runs. Darren Dreifort, summoned from the bullpen, notched his 1st save. The Mets, now 2-1, have been on a roll in the early going.
Sheffield had no bigger at-bat than in the top of the fifth when the four-time All-Star hit a double. The double gave New York the lead, 2-1. It was his 3rd double of the season.
Sheffield said his wife shared good advice with him before the game. "She said, 'Don't allow this game to make you mad.' When I thought about it, I realized this is just a game. I was able to relax at the plate."
