Padres Win in Glorious Fashion
|
The Padres grabbed a win, 5-4, at Jack Murphy Stadium, overcoming a fine effort from Washington pitcher Jose DeLeon. DeLeon went 8 innings and allowed 4 earned runs. San Diego reliever Ramon Pena was the winner. His record is now 1-3. Vince Horsman took the loss. The Padres, with only their 5th win in 22 games, could be the worst team in the league.
The game was at a stalemate until catcher Dave Valle came to bat in the bottom of the 11th. Facing Washington pitcher Vince Horsman, he hit a 1-0 fastball for a run-scoring triple. It was a game-changer, putting San Diego on top, 5-4.
"The game of baseball will test you," said Chris Levin, the San Diego skipper. "This one tested us."
