Diamondbacks Stumble, Lose to Blue Jays
|
The Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks, 8-1. Earning player of the game honors was designated hitter Mark McGwire, who went 2 for 3 with a home run and 2 walks, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 2. Steve Shirley picked up the save for Toronto, his 1st of the year. The Diamondbacks drop to 11-12 and continue their inconsistent start to the 1997 season.
In the top of the first, McGwire pounced on a full count fastball from Omar Daal and hit a 2-run home run. It put Toronto on top, 2-0.
"I'm just looking for a good pitch that I can hit well," said McGwire. "And not try to do too much."
