Senators Sneak Past Mets, 3-2
The Washington Senators picked up a win at Shea Stadium, knocking off the New York Mets, 3-2. On the mound for Washington was right-hander John Burkett, who played a pivotal role in the win. The win was Lee Smith's in relief. His record improves to 2-1. Wayne Edwards took the loss for New York. Washington, now 14-8, has played well in the early going.

The most critical at-bat came in the top of the tenth inning. With two out, Al L. Martin hit a first pitch curveball from Wayne Edwards for a run-scoring single. It put Washington in front, 3-2.

"Win or lose, we pick each other up in this clubhouse," Martin told the Washington Observer.
