Tigers Lose to Orioles, 5-1
|
The Baltimore Orioles got a rather unremarkable outing from starting pitcher Steve Avery, but it was good enough for the club to take a 5-1 decision over the Detroit Tigers. In 6.1 innings, Avery surrendered 7 hits, while striking out 11 and walking 2. He allowed 1 run. The save went to Julian Tavarez, his 3rd this season.
Alvaro Espinoza helped out the Baltimore cause in the bottom of the fourth inning with a run-scoring single. For the game, the shortstop was 2 for 3 with 2 singles.
"I'm just happy to help the team win," Espinoza told the Baltimore Chronicle.
The Tigers fall to 7-15 and continue their uninspiring start to the 1997 season.
