The Baltimore Orioles got a stellar performance from pitcher Steve Avery, who handcuffed the Detroit offense en route to a 5-2 win at Memorial Stadium. Avery picked up the win for Baltimore, going 7.1 innings. He gave up 2 runs on 4 hits. He now sports a record of 1-0. The save went to Dave Walsh, his 1st this season.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Leo Gomez muscled up and hit a solo home run. It put Baltimore ahead, 3-2. For the game, Gomez went 1-4 with a home run.
"We've got a great group of guys," Avery said, "and we're having fun right now."
The Orioles, now 2-0, have hit the ground running this season.
