Multi-HR Day for Hundley as Spiders Overpower Devil Rays, 7-1
|
The Cleveland Spiders stopped the Orlando Devil Rays, 7-1, behind an impressive performance from Todd Hundley. The 27-year old catcher made life miserable for Orlando pitching. He hit 2 home runs, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 4. Juan Nieves got the win, improving to 3-1. He held the Devil Rays to 1 earned run on 4 hits over 6.1 innings, while striking out 7 and walking 5. Willie Banks earned his 1st save in 2 tries.
Cleveland took a 4-1 lead on Hundley's 7th home run of the season. The 2-run home run, which he hit off Alan Benes in the bottom of the sixth, propelled Cleveland to the win.
"Whenever we hold the other team to one run," said Spiders manager Wilson Ogle, "I like our chances."
The Devil Rays fall to 12-13 and continue their wobbly start to the 1997 season.
