Great Effort by Mets RF Sosa Not Enough in 7-6 Loss
The Washington Senators had to overcome a big game from New York right fielder Sammy Sosa to leave Shea Stadium with a 7-6 victory. Sosa hit 3 home runs. Carlos Perez picked up the win, improving his season record to 2-1. He struck out 3 in 7 innings. Lee Smith sewed up the save, his 2nd.

The Senators got an important contribution from first baseman Rafael Palmeiro, who in the top of the second stroked a 1-1 fastball into right-center for a 3-run home run. It was his 10th home run of the season and put the Senators ahead, 7-0.

Palmeiro said his wife shared good advice with him before the game. "She said, 'Don't allow this game to make you mad.' When I thought about it, I realized this is just a game. I was able to relax at the plate."

The Senators raised their record to 16-8.
