Blue Jays Hold Off Senators, 3-2
The Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Washington Senators, 3-2, in United League action at RFK Stadium, with Toronto pitcher John Smiley named player of the game. In 5.2 innings, Smiley surrendered 5 hits, while striking out 7 and walking 2. He allowed 2 runs. Antonio Osuna notched his 29th save in 32 chances.

Toronto used the timely hitting of Cal Ripken Jr. to seize the win. The shortstop stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the sixth inning to put the Blue Jays on top, 3-2. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.

"Enjoyed this one," Ripken Jr. told the Toronto Chronicle. "But it's back to work tomorrow."

Toronto occupies 4th place in the United League East Division at 72-64.
