Pirates Fall Short at New York
|
New York withstood an impressive performance by Pittsburgh first baseman Andy Van Slyke to defeat the Pirates, 6-5, at Yankee Stadium. Van Slyke went 1-2 with a home run and 3 walks. He scored 2 runs and drove in 2. New York reliever Andy Ashby was credited with the win, to go to 6-3. Bryan Clark took the loss for Pittsburgh. New York is in last place in the Federal League East Division with a record of 59-77.
The game was at a stalemate until shortstop Andy Stankiewicz came to bat in the bottom of the 12th. Facing Pittsburgh pitcher Bryan Clark, he hit a 2-0 fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting New York on top, 6-5.
"I'm glad I could get it done when the game was in the balance," Stankiewicz said in his postgame press conference.
