Devil Rays Top Spiders in Extras
|
The Cleveland Spiders got a sterling performance from pitcher Bret Saberhagen, but the Devil Rays still prevailed, 5-4. Saberhagen was named the player of the game in a losing cause. He threw 6 innings of 4-hit ball. The winning streak has now reached 4 games for the Devil Rays.
The game was at a stalemate until right fielder Tim Salmon came to bat in the bottom of the tenth. Facing Cleveland pitcher Steve Karsay, he hit a 2-2 fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Orlando on top, 5-4.
"Both teams played hard," said Orlando manager Ben Tennyson.
