Jones Helps Rangers Run Win Streak to 6
|
With third baseman Chipper Jones leading the charge, the Texas Rangers defeated the Chicago Cubs, 6-1, at Arlington Stadium. Jones, who finished 2nd in the FL in wins above replacement with 7.5 in 1993, was 3-4 with a home run and a double, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 2. Kelly Downs, the winner, improved to 10-9. He held the Cubs to 1 earned run on 3 hits over 7.1 innings, while striking out 8 and walking 2. The 4th-place Rangers have won 6 in a row.
A crucial at-bat came with a runner on 1st and no one out in the bottom of the sixth inning. That's when first baseman Carlos Delgado, who finished 5th in the UL in doubles with 37 last year, hit a double. The Rangers went on to win.
"I believe in our guys," said Texas skipper Sean Norman. "I like the energy they're playing with."
