Vander Wal Excels, But Buzz Win
|
Colorado Springs got a terrific performance from right fielder John Vander Wal, but it wasn't enough to beat the Salt Lake City Buzz. Salt Lake City won the Bella Vista Grounds contest, 6-5. Vander Wal was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He was 3 for 4 with a home run, a double, and a walk. He drove in 5 runs and scored once. Salt Lake City reliever Greg McCarthy was credited with the win, to go to 2-1. John E. Farrell took the loss for Colorado Springs. Colorado Springs, at 47-67, has lost 4 straight.
The Buzz got a big at-bat from shortstop Nelson Liriano. For the game, Liriano went 1 for 4. In the bottom of the eighth, with a runner on 3rd, he stroked a run-scoring single. His 116th hit of the season gave Salt Lake City a 6-5 lead.
"It's always a heck of a lot easier to get to sleep after a win," Liriano told the Salt Lake City Gazette. "I know I'll rest easy tonight."
