Padres Clip Giants in Tight Contest
|
The San Francisco Giants got a sterling performance from pitcher Floyd Youmans, but the Padres still prevailed, 5-3. Youmans was named the player of the game in a losing cause. He threw 7 innings of 3-hit ball. The win was Wes Gardner's in relief. His record improves to 3-2. Floyd Youmans took the loss for San Francisco. San Diego goes to 18-9 with the win.
San Diego used the bat of Manny Ramirez to get the win. The designated hitter hammered a 3-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to put the Padres ahead, 3-1. It was his lone hit in 3 at-bats, but it did its damage.
"We're in a marathon, not a sprint," said Ramirez. "But I like how we're playing right now."
