Mets Get Past Toronto for 4-3 Win
|
The Mets faced a stiff challenge from Toronto pitcher John Smiley, but persevered to claim a win at Shea Stadium. The final score was 4-3. Smiley went 6 innings and allowed 1 earned run. New York reliever Todd Jones got the win, raising his record to 2-0. German Jimenez was tagged with the loss. The Blue Jays fall to 13-13 and continue their uneasy start to the 1997 season.
Gary Sheffield was the walk-off hero for New York. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Mets shortstop hit a dramatic run-scoring single to send the teams home.
"I like our moxie," said Mets manager Michael Kritikos.
