Leave it to the veteran.

The St. Louis Cardinals got a great start from 34-year-old right-hander Joe Johnson, who earned player of the game honors today as St. Louis won the contest 8-1 at Joe Robbie Stadium. Johnson threw 7 innings of 6-hit ball in the win, which allowed the St. Louis to grab a 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series.

One important at-bat came with the bases loaded in the top of the first inning. Facing Florida hurler Kevin Appier, Royce Clayton, who was drafted in the 2nd round of the 1990 draft, hit a run-scoring single. The Cardinals went on to win.

"We came out aggressive," said Cardinals manager Adam Rabel. "We came out swinging the bats."

The next game is scheduled for tomorrow in Miami Gardens. The scheduled starters for the game are Marty Bystrom for the St. Louis Cardinals and Chris Nabholz for the the Florida Marlins.
