The stakes were high. John Burkett was ready.

The right-hander turned in a performance for the ages at Olympic Stadium today, pitching a 9-inning, complete-game shutout to lead the Washington Senators to victory in Game 1 of the Division Series. Burkett held the Montreal Expos to 6 hits and 3 walks, while striking out 5. The win got the best-of-7 series off to a good start for Washington, which now leads 1-0.

Burkett was in the zone all game. He frustrated Montreal hitters while giving the Senators 9 innings of quality work. Burkett threw 118 pitches, allowing 6 hits and getting 5 punchouts.

"We played hard and won," said Burkett. "Sometimes, baseball really is that easy.'

Game 2 is set to be played tomorrow at Olympic Stadium. The scheduled starters for the game are Andy Pettitte for the Washington Senators and Roger Clemens for the the Montreal Expos.
