Home Loss Shrinks Marlins' Series Lead to 3-1
|
In a remarkable effort, Jim Abbott single-handedly kept the Cincinnati Reds in the playoffs.
The Cincinnati Reds left-hander threw a complete game shutout on the road to prevent a Florida Marlins sweep, striking out 3 along the way. The Reds needed all he had, as their own offense struggled to get into gear. The 4-0 Cincinnati win means the club now trails 3-1 in the best-of-7 series.
Abbott, a native of Flint, Michigan, was dealing all game. He kept Florida hitters off-balance, while giving the Reds 9 quality innings. Abbott threw 119 pitches, allowing 4 hits and striking out 3.
"I'll be honest," said Abbott. "I was running on fumes at the end."
The next game is scheduled for tomorrow. Slated to start are Joey Hamilton for the Cincinnati Reds and Kevin Appier for the the Florida Marlins.
