Burkett, Washington Start Division Series Strong with Home Win
John Burkett and the Washington Senators opened the Division Series in brilliant fashion today, shutting out the visiting Toronto Blue Jays at RFK Stadium 5-0 and securing an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Burkett, the Senators right-hander, was named player of the game as he threw 8 innings of shutout ball.

Burkett allowed no runs over 8 innings. He also racked up 9 strikeouts.

"Throwing strikes was the main thing," Burkett said.

The next game is set to be played tomorrow. Slated to start are Jeff D. Robinson for the Toronto Blue Jays and Andy Pettitte for the the Washington Senators.
