Mets Take Nail-Biter Over Orioles
The Baltimore Orioles got a superb performance from pitcher Dwight Gooden, but the New York Mets still won the game, 1-0. Gooden was named the player of the game despite the loss. He threw 11 innings of shutout ball. New York reliever Willie Blair picked up the win, upping his record to 3-0. Julian Tavarez was saddled with the loss. The Orioles fall to 9-19 and continue to sputter in the early going.

The clutch at-bat came in the bottom of the 14th inning, when New York shortstop Gary Sheffield, facing Hector Fajardo, had a run-scoring sacrifice fly. It gave the Mets the 1-0 win.

"To not win that game stings a little bit," said Baltimore manager Daniel Ward.
