Oakland right-hander Matt Morris made an effective start against the San Diego Padres at Oakland Coliseum, leading his team to a 6-3 win. Jason Bere notched his 29th save in 34 chances. The last-place Athletics now have a 5-game winning streak.

Greg Vaughn put Oakland in front, 5-1, when he took Doug Drabek downtown. His 3-run home run came with no one out in the bottom of the sixth. It was his 10th home run of the season.

Morris called the win the result of "everyone being in sync."
