O'Neill Slugs Devil Rays to 7-4 Win
|
Behind a solid performance from designated hitter Paul O'Neill, the Orlando Devil Rays defeated the Cincinnati Reds, 7-4. O'Neill went 3 for 3 with 2 home runs, a double, and a walk, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 3 for the Devil Rays. John Smoltz picked up the win with 6 innings of work. He allowed 4 earned runs on 10 hits, while walking 3 and striking out 6. On the season, he is now 13-12. The Devil Rays bumped their record to 74-67 with this latest triumph.
O'Neill came through for Orlando with a 2-run home run in the top of the sixth. He hit a full count fastball to right-center field, staking his team to a 5-4 lead.
"It was a solid team effort and we'll try to keep this momentum going," O'Neill told reporters after the game.
