|
The Pittsburgh Pirates topped the Boston Red Sox, 5-3, in Federal League action at Three Rivers Stadium. The player of the game was Pittsburgh pitcher and Victoria, Texas native Doug Drabek. Drabek went 6.1 innings to notch the win. He scattered 6 hits, walked 4, and struck out 7. His record improves to 12-9. Bryan Harvey converted his 31st save in 36 tries.
In the bottom of the fourth, Jose Valentin took a fastball from Pete Harnisch and pounded a 2-run home run to right-center. It put Pittsburgh on top, 4-3. For the game, Valentin went 1 for 4 with a home run. He drove in 2 runs and scored once.
"We had a good game plan," Drabek said, "and we were able to execute it."
Pittsburgh is now riding a 3-game win streak.
