Yankees Solve Red Sox, 6-2
|
1996 is shaping up to be a forgettable year for the Boston Red Sox.
The New York Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox, 6-2, at Fenway Park. Don Mattingly was recognized as player of the game for his performance. He was 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 singles, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. The two-time Gold Glove winner was a menace to Boston all day. Mark Clark got the win, improving to 6-17. He worked 6 innings, giving up 2 runs on 8 hits, while striking out 6 and walking 4.
Mattingly came through with some timely hitting for New York. With the score 2-2 in the top of the fifth and one down, Mattingly hit a 2-1 fastball for a 2-run home run. His 18th home run of the season made it 4-2, New York.
Mattingly told a New York Today reporter that he was "more than satisfied" with the win.
The 5th-place Red Sox have lost 4 straight games.
