Senators Fall Short at Baltimore
|
The Washington Senators got a sterling performance from pitcher Jose DeLeon, but the Orioles still prevailed, 4-3. DeLeon was named the player of the game in a losing cause. He threw 7 innings of 5-hit ball. Baltimore reliever Chuck Cary picked up the win, bumping his record to 7-0. Todd Jones was collared with the loss. The Orioles, now 79-65, have won 9 in a row.
Leo Gomez was 2-3 with a home run and a walk for Baltimore. With one out and the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, Gomez, who was drafted in the 3rd round of the 1989 draft, had a clutch at-bat. Facing Washington hurler Todd Jones, he hit a walk-off solo home run to give the Orioles a 4-3 lead.
"We'll savor this win," Gomez told the Baltimore Daily, "then get ready for the next game."
