Van Slyke Stars for Pirates in 10-8 Win
|
Getting a good performance from first baseman Andy Van Slyke, the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Atlanta Braves, 10-8. Van Slyke went 4 for 5 with a home run, a triple, and 2 singles, while scoring 4 runs for the Pirates. Jack Armstrong got the win, improving to 8-11. He worked 6 innings, giving up 5 runs on 6 hits, while striking out 4 and walking 4. Bryan Harvey notched his 32nd save in 37 chances.
In the top of the fifth, Pittsburgh left fielder Geronimo Berroa had a productive at-bat. With runners on 2nd and 3rd and two out, Berroa stroked a 2-run triple to right-center. It made the score 7-5, Pittsburgh. For the game, he was 2-4 with a triple. He drove in 2 runs.
"It was a nice win for our side today," said Pirates manager Stephen Ginter. "Not perfect, but we'll take it."
The third-place Pirates are now 73-71, the Braves 70-75.
