The Florida Marlins got a strong performance from pitcher Al Leiter, who stymied the Cincinnati offense en route to a 5-2 win at Riverfront Stadium. Florida leads the Federal League East Division by 6½ games.

Florida used the bat of Charles Johnson to get the win. The catcher hammered a 3-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to put the Marlins ahead, 5-1. It was his lone hit in 3 at-bats, but it did its damage.

"At the end of the day, it's always about your starting pitcher," said Florida skipper Stephen Ginter.
