Mets Score Late, Top Orioles, 5-3
|
1996 is shaping up to be a forgettable year for the Baltimore Orioles.
The inspired effort of Baltimore center fielder Kenny Lofton was not enough to prevent a 5-3 loss to the New York Mets. Lofton was 4-4 with a home run and 3 singles. Frank Castillo picked up the win with 7.1 innings of work. He allowed 3 earned runs on 8 hits, while walking 3 and striking out 5. On the season, he is now 18-5.
Olmedo Saenz provided some late-game heroics for New York. In the top of the eighth inning, he hit a 2-run single. It came on a 1-0 fastball from Brian Keyser and propelled New York to a 5-3 lead.
Saenz called the triumph "a good team win."
The Mets sit in 4th place in the United League East Division with a record of 82-64.
